Suzhou
22 placesMention Suzhou and you can't avoid phrases like 'water town', 'houses resting on rivers' or 'the Venice of the East', but none of these words can capture its one essence: serene elegance. Walking through Suzhou's city, you must slow your pace. Narrow lanes, green trees, white walls, and branches quietly stretching out from behind a wall: stroll through such a streetscape and even the breeze you bring seems to stir everything around you. The old lanes of Suzhou, their bluestone slabs worn smooth, the faint scent of wood, and the stone lions with patches of moss at their doorways: these are Suzhou's deepest dream. Shantang Street, Taohuawu, Pingjiang Road... even the unhurried, peaceful feeling carried in the street names cannot be imitated. Although billboards, the emblem of modern life, have moved into the buildings of this old city, they have never destroyed this feeling, and that is what people envy most.
WuxiThis word doesn't match Wuxi's history at all, yet more and more shopping malls, such as Yaohan, are replacing old residences, many of which were once homes of notable figures.

NanjingNanjing is known as the Ancient Capital of the Six Dynasties, but in fact ten dynasties in all established their capitals here, which is why it is also called the “Metropolis of Ten Dynasties.” No other city has endured such deep calamities, with dynasty after dynasty falling here. Now that its former glory and splendour have faded, the ancient city is like a weathered, serene elder, recounting the years of its history to all who listen.

Yangzhou“Of the world's moonlit nights, two parts belong to Yangzhou's charming scoundrels”: this single line of poetry drew emperors, ministers and literati in ancient times, and it remains the most evocative slogan today. The song-and-dance glamour of the old pleasure quarters has long faded. Though “Yangzhou in the third month of flowering mist” is the famous image, the most captivating thing is still the ordinary lanes and alleys of its streets. For a few yuan, hire a pedicab and glide through the lanes that interweave like blood vessels, and Yangzhou's past and present rush at you all at once.

ZhenjiangHopping on any bus in Zhenjiang with no particular destination, watching the street scenes and listening to the local dialect, you may feel as though you have stepped into an old black-and-white film. Beneath the faded, ancient buildings, the city's calm breathing and steady heartbeat come through. It lacks the dazzling looks and vibrant energy of other Jiangnan cities, but its peaceful, gentle atmosphere makes you feel at home even when you are far from it.

Qinhuai River
Nanjing
Qinhuai River → Confucius Temple → Dacheng Hall → Mingde Hall → Zunjing Pavilion → Jiangnan Imperial Examination Hall → Wuyi Lane → Former Residences of the Wang and Xie Families → Former Residence of Wu Jingzi → Taoye Ferry → Chaotian Palace → Zhonghua Gate. The five-kilometer-long Qinhuai River scenic belt, centered on Confucius Temple, is both Nanjing’s largest entertainment hub and a hugely popular sightseeing area. “Ten Li Qinhuai” refers to the prosperity of the Qinhuai River area in the past, when merchants gathered and culture flourished. Successive dynasties described it as “a district of wind, flowers, and moonlight, a gathering place of gold dust and elegance.” After renovation, the Qinhuai River still has painted boats, waterside pavilions, green windows, and vermilion doors, but the addition of many modern lighting technologies makes it somewhat noisy, and it retains little of the leisurely charm of earlier times.
