Dongting Lake and Junshan Island
The vast expanse of Lake Dongting, the “Eight-hundred-li Dongting”, is magnificent. For visitors who enjoy watching the rain and quiet reflection, the best time to visit Yueyang Tower is from mid-April to early June. This is the rainy season, and sitting quietly in the tower, listening to the wind and rain and watching the turbulent waves surge, while reading the “Record of Yueyang Tower” inside, creates a state of mind that words cannot fully express. Below Yueyang Tower, Lake Dongting has been known since ancient times as the “Eight-hundred-li Dongting”. Although its area is now about half of what it once was, it remains the second-largest freshwater lake in China, with misty waves stretching to the horizon where water and sky merge into one, truly matching the lines “It embraces distant mountains and swallows the Yangtze, vast and boundless, reaching the edge of the sky.” The most legendary sites on Junshan are the Tomb of the Two Consorts and the Liuyi Well. According to legend, Ehuang and Nüying shed their tears on the bamboo here, which is why the island is also famous for its many varieties of bamboo. The Liuyi Well is the entrance, in folk tales, through which Liu Yi travelled to the Dragon Palace of Lake Dongting to search for the Dragon Princess.

Shiniuzhai
The stronghold is named Shiniuzhai (Stone Ox Stockade) because a huge rock on its western side resembles a yellow ox. Shiniuzhai has steep terrain, with towering cliffs and strangely striking scenery. The attractions within the stockade are known for their danger and steepness, and can be summarized as “One Ox, Two Turtles, Three Passes, Four Bridges, Five Villages, Six Sky Lines, Seven Strange Rocks, Eight Temples, and a Hundred and Eight Cliff Views without end”. Particularly rare is the well-preserved ancient city wall, over 2,000 meters long. Shiniuzhai enjoys the reputation of “The First Stockade under Heaven”.

Quzi Temple
When Qu Yuan was exiled, he once lived on Yusi Mountain by the Miluo River. After Qu Yuan threw himself into the Miluo River, the local people built the Quzi Temple in his memory. The surviving temple was restored in the Qing dynasty and now largely reflects Qing-style architecture. It has three halls, with courtyards at the front, back, left and right, and a central Danchi (Red Pond) containing a large flower platform with a 300-year-old sweet osmanthus tree. The corridor walls are inlaid with many stone steles engraved with poems and prose written by later generations in tribute to Qu Yuan.

La stazione ferroviaria di Yueyang (岳阳火车站) si trova in Zhanqian Lu, nel distretto di Yueyanglou, ed è raggiungibile con gli autobus linee 5, 22 e 37.
La stazione dell'alta velocità di Yueyang è la Yueyang Dong (岳阳东站). Da qui si può prendere un treno ad alta velocità per Changsha: il viaggio dura circa 34 minuti e il biglietto di seconda classe costa ¥69.5, un collegamento molto comodo.
Autobus
Attualmente Yueyang conta quattro autostazioni a lunga percorrenza: la Stazione autobus di Yueyang (岳阳市汽车站), all'incrocio tra Baling Zhonglu e Chengdong Beilu; l'autostazione di Jianshe Beilu (建设北路); la stazione di Baling in Chengdong Nanlu; e la nuova autostazione di Baling Donglu.
Trasporto fluviale
Il porto di Chenglingji (城陵矶港) è il più grande porto dello Hunan, ma i servizi passeggeri a lunga percorrenza sono ormai quasi del tutto sospesi. Dietro la Torre di Yueyang c'è un molo passeggeri da cui si può prendere una barca per l'Isola di Junshan.

Yueyang ha numerose linee di autobus urbani e tutte le principali attrazioni turistiche sono servite da autobus; la corsa costa ¥1.5. Mangiare e bere
Yueyang si affaccia sul lago Dongting e gode di una posizione geografica privilegiata; la gente del posto ha grande esperienza nella cucina del pesce, e il più celebre è il «banchetto di pesce intero Baling» (巴陵全鱼席). Il «Farfalla che vola sul mare» (蝴蝶飘海), preparato con filetti di pesce serpente (乌鱼), è celebre a Yueyang per la sua consistenza croccante e tenera. Tra i ristoranti più noti della città figurano Weiyu Jiujia (味腴酒家) e Yunmeng Fandian (云梦饭店).

Shopping
Le specialità tradizionali sono i ventagli di carta e quelli di piume. I ventagli di carta hanno stecche sottili e carta leggera e trasparente: per realizzarne uno occorrono molte fasi di lavorazione; i ventagli di piume sono invece realizzati con le penne di uccelli come le oche selvatiche del Dongting. Oggi i ventagli di Yueyang contano oltre 250 varietà.
Altre specialità: miele di osmanto di Pingjiang (平江山桂花蜜), semi di loto dello Hunan (湘莲), Dongting Chun (洞庭春), liquore Guishe (龟蛇酒) e tè Junshan Yinzhen (君山银针茶).
