Cities and areas in Fujian

Wuyi Mountain
18 placesAs early as the Western Zhou period, Wuyi Mountain was already part of the “Land of the Seven Min” (七闽之地), the settlement area of the Min people. In the late Spring and Autumn period, the Yue people entered Fujian. Later, through ethnic migration and blending, the area gradually took on its present character, with the Han people in the majority and the She people living in concentrated communities. This is why traces of ancient Yue culture, such as cliff-suspended boat coffins (架壑船棺), are still preserved here.

Gulangyu Island
Xiamen · 1–2 days
Gulangyu faces Xiamen across the sea. Its original name was Yuanshazhou (Round Sandbank). Waves striking the sea caves sounded like drums, so during the Ming dynasty it was renamed Gulangyu, meaning "Drum Wave Island". The island's human landscape is its greatest attraction. The villas that have survived intact are mainly in styles from the Philippines, Singapore and Malaysia, giving the island a distinct Southeast Asian flavour. There are also 13 former foreign consulates, and the British Consulate you see as you disembark is the first you will notice, which is why the island is known as the "Exhibition of Architecture from Many Nations". In addition, almost everyone on the island seems to be musical, and many members of China's largest symphony orchestra came from here. In July 2017, Gulangyu was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Nanjing Tulou
Southern Fujian · 2–5 hours
“If you haven’t seen Tianluokeng, you haven’t really seen the tulou” is a well-known saying about Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster in Nanjing County, the most representative of the Nanjing tulou. Tianluokeng is one of the most spectacular tulou clusters in southwestern Fujian. Locals jokingly describe its five buildings as “four dishes and a soup,” and their arrangement across the hillside is both imposing and striking. The cluster includes Hegui Tulou, the oldest; Shunyu Tulou, the largest; Cuilin Tulou, the smallest; and well-known structures such as Yong’an Tulou and Yuchang Tulou. Visiting the tulou in Nanjing also offers a glimpse of everyday life for the Hakka people.
