About Suzhou Creek

For longtime Shanghainese, Suzhou Creek is more than just a place name; it holds the memories of the city's transformation. The old factories along both banks have since moved out, and their empty workshops have been taken over by artists as studios and galleries. M50 Creative Park is the best example, with its rugged and distinctive warehouse style. Strolling along Suzhou Creek, you can listen to the slow, lingering sound of ship horns and get a sense of the bustle and glory that old Shanghai once had.

Tips from the guidebook

  • The most famous bridge over Suzhou Creek is undoubtedly Waibaidu Bridge, which appears in almost every film about Shanghai in the 1920s.

Nanjing Road

Rather than shopping, here it is better to simply stroll. Once known as the 'Ten-Mile Foreign Settlement', Nanjing Road is Shanghai's oldest commercial street and is now also called 'China's Number One Commercial Street'. It runs from the Bund in the east to the junction with Yan'an West Road at Jing'an Temple in the west, stretching 5.5 km, with more than 600 shops lining both sides. The newly opened Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street, running from West Tibet Road in the west to Henan Central Road in the east, is especially suited to those who want to experience urban commercial charm while wandering. At night, neon lights flicker and the street glows brilliantly, with a prosperity rivalling New York and Tokyo. For shopping, especially clothing, it is less affordable than nearby Qipu Road and North Sichuan Road, and slightly less upscale than Huaihai Road or Xujiahui. The TV series 'Blossoms Shanghai' also displays the Shanghai atmosphere of this street to the fullest.
