About Goddess Peak

Beyond the Wushan clouds and rain, Wu Gorge's other marvel is its deep, graceful peaks. Along the gorge banks, green mountains stretch unbroken, ranges rise like screens and pierce the sky, and the deep, long gorge and winding river mean that with every bend, the boat passes a new peak.

The peaks lining Wu Gorge include the Twelve Peaks, each with its own character, and among them the Goddess Peak is the most slender and charming. Its valley and shape resemble a goddess, and combined with its beautiful legend, the lifeless rock seems to have acquired a little enchanting spirit. At sunrise, the sun rises from the depths of the Goddess Peak, a classic sight on the Three Gorges. After the Three Gorges Dam was completed, the Goddess Peak was submerged by less than 50 metres, though this hardly detracts from its appeal.

Tips from the guidebook

  • Best times to watch the sunrise: spring and summer 6:30–8:30; autumn and winter 7:30–9:00.

Wu Gorge

Wu Gorge, also known as the Great Gorge, is celebrated for its elegance and is the most spectacular stretch of the Three Gorges. The gorge is deep and winding, carved by the Yangtze as it cuts across the main ridge of the Wushan anticline. Abrupt, peculiar peaks and jagged rocks rise throughout the area, the ranges stand like screens, and the river meanders like a winding gallery full of poetic charm. The gorge is deep and narrow, receives little sunlight, and mist lingers in the ravine in ever-changing shapes, creating the Buddha's Light of Wu Gorge. This inspired the timeless lines: 'Having once seen the vast sea, all other waters pale in comparison; beyond the clouds of Wushan, no other clouds can compare.'

Shibaozhai

Shibaozhai’s breathtaking beauty comes mainly from the fact that it is built on the cliffs of Yuyin Mountain, blending with the mountain’s steep, towering form. Its 12-storey pagoda-like tower, rising 56 metres and built against the mountain, is entirely wooden and is the only surviving example in China of chuandou-style timber construction. Not a single iron nail was used, and after more than 300 years it remains in excellent condition, making it a true architectural marvel.
