- Hengdian is famous for its film and television studios. Over 1,200 films and TV productions have been shot here, including Hero, Curse of the Golden Flower, Painted Skin, The Opium War, and Mei Ren Tian Xia.
Watching Shows
Qin Palace, Qingming Shanghe Tu, Ming-Qing Palace Complex, Guangzhou Street, Hong Kong Street, and Dream Valley all stage multiple performances every day (check the Hengdian scenic area's official website for specific showtimes). Visiting in one day is enough to admire the architecture, but the shows are what make the ticket worthwhile. It is recommended to stay two days to enjoy the performances at each scenic area.
Preparation and Information
Language
Hengdian belongs to Dongyang City, and the local dialect is Dongyang dialect. However, because film crews have been shooting here year-round and many extras come from all over the country, you will hear dialects from every corner of China.
Climate and Best Time to Visit
Hengdian has distinct four seasons. Spring and autumn are comfortable, while summer is hot. The best time to visit is March to November. In January, the weather is cold and Dream Valley enters a seasonal closure. Of course, if you are visiting for a favourite idol, your timing will depend on when that star is filming.
Things to see
Qin King's Palace
The Qin King's Palace is vast and magnificent, with a tower every five steps and a pavilion every ten, laid out with rigorous precision. Towering walls and palace halls complement one another, soaring and imposing, vividly expressing the mighty ambition with which Qin Shi Huang conquered the six rival states and unified all under heaven, stirring the soul. Built in 1997 for director Chen Kaige's historical film *Jing Ke Assassinates the King of Qin*, it has also served as a filming location for the acclaimed films *Hero* and *The King of Kung Fu*.

Ming and Qing Palace Gardens
The Ming and Qing Palace Gardens are a 1:1 replica of key areas of Beijing’s Forbidden City, including the Three Great Halls. As you move through them, you can feel the majesty of the imperial palaces, the grandeur of the princely residences and government offices, the delicacy of hutong courtyard homes, and the spaciousness of imperial gardens. Strolling along the paths, you may wonder whether a concubine is singing a lament just beyond the wall, or whether passing through one of the palace gates will transport you back to the Ming or Qing dynasty, where you might live out an unforgettable love story with an emperor. The gardens have served as a location for over a hundred films, including *Tianxia Wushuang* and *Curse of the Golden Flower*, and many popular palace dramas were filmed here. If you want to see actors hard at work on set, this is the place.

New Yuanmingyuan Park
Many people have sighed over the story of the burning of the Old Summer Palace, but Hengdian’s New Yuanmingyuan Park recreates to some degree the “Garden of Gardens” of history. The Spring Garden is based on the *Forty Scenes of Yuanmingyuan* and centres on spring, recreating an imperial garden that is by turns solemn and sacred, and poetically picturesque. The Summer Garden is modelled on the Changchun Garden, and its most astonishing feature is the famous Twelve Zodiac Fountains.
