About Sheshan National Forest Park

Sheshan Mountain lies in the southwestern suburbs of Shanghai and is one of the city’s rare “mountain” destinations. It is a historic mountain that the traveller Xu Xiake visited five times. Unfortunately, its historic sites and scenery, worn by the vicissitudes of history, began to fade away in the early Qing dynasty. Some of the old attractions were restored starting in 1993.

Sheshan is divided into East and West Mountains. On the northern part of the summit of West Sheshan stands the Sheshan Catholic Basilica, full of religious character and blending architectural styles from several countries. On the southern part of the summit is the Sheshan Observatory, whose original building dates from 1900. The mountain body of East Sheshan is graceful and densely wooded, with rich flora and fauna. It is especially famous for its bamboo shoots, which have an orchid-like fragrance.
