About Green Lake Park

If you visit Kunming after November, the one thing you must not miss is watching black-headed gulls at Green Lake Park. Since 1985, thousands upon thousands of black-headed gulls have flown here from distant Siberia to overwinter at Green Lake and Dianchi. At their peak, up to around 30,000 gather here, skimming across the water and playing alongside visitors, making them an annual spectacle in Kunming.

Tips from the guidebook

  • 1. The best place to see black-headed gulls in winter is near Cuihu Hotel. The best time for watching and feeding the gulls is from dawn until 10:00.
  • 2. Bread vendors around the lake have declined. Now the main food is gull feed, about ¥10 for a small bag.
  • 3. By day, this is the lively 'back garden' of Kunming residents; by night, the area around the lake becomes a playground for night owls. Many culture bars line this district, with a strong artistic atmosphere, where you can sit back, sip tea, play music, catch up with friends or read.
