Preparation and Advice

Climate and Travel Season

Mount Tiantai is a famous summer retreat in southeastern Zhejiang. The best time to visit is April to October; visiting in July and August lets you enjoy the scenery while escaping the scorching sun.

The local customs here are simple and unpretentious, and some folk traditions are fascinating. Taking part in a local wedding, where you can experience the sedan-chair procession and the 'bridal chamber teasing,' is an unusual experience that feels like stepping back into the 1930s and 1940s.

Getting Around Town

tip: You can walk to the sights you want to see in Xikou Town, or take a pedicab, whose driver will accompany you around the town's scenic spots. To explore the scenery on the mountain, the sightseeing train or cable car is a good choice.

Things to see

Mount Tiantai contains a wealth of historical, cultural and natural landscapes, well worth taking time to explore thoroughly.

Guoqing Temple

This thousand-year-old temple is a must-see on any visit to Mount Tiantai. Its name is known far and wide, yet its gate is discreetly understated; only once you step inside do you catch sight of towering ancient trees and feel the grandeur of the place. At Guoqing Temple, the mountain is the temple and the temple is the mountain, and its simple, Zen-inspired architecture exudes a strong sense of otherworldliness. When you chat with the monks and ask them for directions, you will notice their warmth, along with a deliberate sense of distance, and you may feel that you are close to the Buddha yet still far away. Because Guoqing Temple has had considerable influence on Buddhism in Japan and Korea, it still draws foreign visitors when incense offerings are at their peak.

Tiantai Mountain Great Waterfall

In fact, the Tiantai Mountain Great Waterfall was already world-famous more than 1,600 years ago, when it was known as the Tongbai Waterfall or the Three-Well Waterfall. The great Eastern Jin writer Sun Chuo even wrote lines praising it: “Red clouds rise from Chicheng to mark the way; the waterfall flies down to draw the boundary.” Yet this spectacular waterfall “disappeared” for more than 60 years. In 1960, after the Tongbai Reservoir and hydropower station were built, the waterfall stopped flowing. Only in recent years, as the ecological environment has recovered, has the legendary Tiantai Mountain Great Waterfall reappeared. Dropping 325 metres, it surpasses the 287-metre Baizhang Qi Waterfall and regains the title of “China’s Tallest Waterfall.”

Shiliang Flying Waterfall

You haven’t truly been to Tiantai Mountain until you have seen Shiliang. Its fame rests entirely on water and terrain, and here the highlight is the flying waterfall. Hidden in a mountain gorge and accompanied by the chanting of temple bells, such a waterfall is rare indeed. No wonder *The Legend of the Condor Heroes* was filmed here. Follow in the footsteps of the traveller Xu Xiake up to Guanpu Pavilion (观瀑亭) to take in the full, grand view, and you will surely feel, as he did, the urge to compose poetry. Deep in the mountains lies Fangguang Temple, small and secluded, a fine place for reflecting on the transience of life.

2–4 hours · ¥60

Huading Forest Park

Huading Peak is the main summit of Mount Tiantai, and Huading Temple draws crowds of visitors. April and May are the best time to visit, when the cloud-mist tea is fragrant and the azaleas are in bloom. Be sure to sample the tea: mountain tea brewed with mountain spring water is not found just anywhere. In the hills is Huangjing Cave, where Wang Xizhi is said to have written the *Huangting Jing* (Scripture of the Yellow Court). The Youjun Ink Pond near the Summer Resort is where Wang Xizhi practised the eight basic strokes of the character 永 and rinsed his brush. Enjoy the tea, take in the views and reflect on history: don’t miss any of them.

2–4 hours · ¥50

Qiongtai Fairy Valley

The appeal here goes well beyond ordinary mountains and waters; it lies in the mystery that arises where landscape meets Daoist immortal lore. The most classic sight is the combination of the Baizhang Cliff Waterfall and the Dragon Pool, whose harmonious flow makes you want to compose poetry on the spot. The tea bar by the Dragon Pool offers a place to rest and, along the way, to calm your mind amid the surrounding jade-green scenery. Some say this is the most beautiful place on Mount Tiantai, and it is no wonder that Li Bai once sighed, “Dragon towers and phoenix gates he would not dwell in; he would soar straight to Mount Tiantai.”

Xikou

The ancient town of Xikou is ringed by green mountains and crossed by the Xiu Creek. Not every sight demands a visit, but the scenery here is genuinely beautiful. Xikou now also offers thrilling activities such as rafting and tobogganing, which adventurous young travellers may want to try.

Xikou · 1–2 days · Full-area combo ticket ¥230 (includes ¥20 scenic-area transport fee; Xuedou Temple costs an extra ¥10). Former Residence of Chiang Kai-shek ¥120 (includes Wuling Gate, Xikou Museum, Wenchang Pavilion, Qishui Bridge, Yanxi Xiaozhu, Wuling Middle School, Chiang Ancestral Hall, Fenghao House, Yutai Salt Shop, Mohe Hall, Wuling Park, Wei Qi's Tomb, Chiang Mother's Tomb Path at Fenghao House, Azalea Valley and Butterfly World). Xuedou Mountain ¥120 (excluding Xuedou Temple). ¥148

Xuedou Mountain

The most popular scenic area in Xikou. Similar mountain-and-water landscapes can certainly be found across Zhejiang, but Qianzhang Cliff and Sanyin Pool are the most loved and also the most demanding on your stamina.

Xikou · 0.5 days

Chicheng Mountain

This is a solitary mountain. It is a pity that there is no water beside it, and some feel it lacks spiritual energy. In fact, what is remarkable here are the traces left by immortals and Daoist recluses, which scholars and poets, past and present, have celebrated in their writing and painting. If you look closely at the low caves inside the mountain, you can still see bamboo beds and bedding, probably the dwellings of Daoist hermits. If you happen to be on the mountain at sunrise or sunset, don’t forget to visit Guanxia Pavilion (观霞亭) to admire its most famous view, “Chicheng Qixia” (Rosy Clouds over Chicheng).

Eat & drink

Local Snacks

Xikou's 'Three Treasures': taro head (yutou), thousand-layer cake (qianceng bing) and honey peach, all of which are delicacies not to be missed.

Good-Value Eateries

As at many other mountain scenic areas, the higher-end restaurants are mostly in the big hotels, such as the Wuling Villa restaurant, the Fenghua Grand Hotel restaurant and the Huaxia Hotel restaurant. For lunch in Xikou, though, there is no need to go to a restaurant: on the open ground in front of Wenchang Pavilion on the north bank of the Shan River, many locals set up snack stalls, where you can taste local specialties at affordable prices.

Yuanwaiyuan Home-Style Restaurant displays its prices clearly, and its taro and pork ribs are good.

Jiaobing Tong

Local Snacks

The most distinctive food of Mount Tiantai, a local festival treat traditionally made only at Qingming, the Ghost Festival, the Winter Solstice and Spring Festival. Today it is also served to visiting friends and relatives. The wrapper is made by mixing flour with water into a batter and cooking it into thin sheets, and the fillings are rich and varied.

Danqing Yangwei

Local Snacks

This snack is prepared in a distinctive way. First, red bean paste is mixed with white sugar into a paste, shaped into balls and wrapped in caul fat. Next, egg whites (yolks removed) are beaten until stiff and mixed with a little sweet potato starch. The caul-fat-wrapped balls are then rolled evenly in the seasoned egg white and deep-fried twice.

  • A Tasty “Hulatai” Tiantai’s snack “hulatai” (糊啦汰) is a soup made with more than ten ingredients, most of them vegetarian. Eat it with jiaobing pancakes (饺饼简) for a balance of dry and wet textures. One set is usually enough, and it is very delicious.

Yunai Tou

Golden-brown in colour and round or oblong in shape, with pink tips. Its “duck-sauce taro” (鸭汁芋艿) is a famous local dish from Fenghua.

Qiancengbing (Thousand-Layer Cake)

Founded in 1878. Made mainly from wheat flour with added brown sugar, sesame, peanuts and an appropriate amount of laver (taicai) powder, through 12 steps. In Xikou, the “Wangmaolong” and “Qianzhang Feizhu” brands are considered the most authentic.

Shopping

Tiantai is famous for its medicinal herbs, especially notoginseng (sanqi), gastrodia (tianma) and atractylodes (baizhu). Handicrafts such as straw weaving, bamboo weaving and embroidered clothing have also long been admired. Because Tiantai’s high mountains are often shrouded in mist, its Zhonghua Dingwu tea (中华顶雾茶) is considered a treasure among China’s green teas, prized for its “glossy green colour, clear liquor and rich, fragrant flavour.” Tiantai produces high-quality mountain tea and is also the birthplace of Eastern tea culture, the Chinese tea ceremony.
