Things to see

Wuyang River Three Gorges

Known as a ‘natural ink-wash scroll’, the Wuyang River is prized for its ever-changing colours, and the patterns and hues on the cliffs and peaks along its banks are equally varied. The river's scenery has five wonders: the most magical is ‘Broken Mirror Made Whole’, the most elegant is ‘Three-Tier Waterfall’, the most magnificent is ‘Peacock Peak’, the most perilous is ‘One Line of Sky’ (Yixiantian), and the most expansive is ‘Reclining Buddha Ridge’. Downstream in the Wuyang Valley lies the true essence of the Wuyang River Scenic Area, characterised chiefly by its strange gorges, dangerous peaks and emerald waters.

Zhenyuan Ancient Town and Zhusheng Bridge

Some say Zhenyuan is an ink-wash painting, ‘plain yet with unexpected rarities, understated yet with a distinctive charm’, and it has remained well preserved for more than two thousand years. Only by walking through its secluded old lanes can you truly appreciate the town's natural and unpretentious character. The lanes of Zhenyuan are quiet, following the contours of the hills, climbing slopes and winding around corners, a feature that is unique in its own right. On the western side of the old town stands the New Bridge (Xin Daqiao), and on the eastern side, Zhusheng Bridge, the landmark of the ancient city. For centuries, the ancient city of Zhenyuan has preserved a layout in which land routes and waterways run side by side, with streets in front and the river behind. Residential houses are set in pleasing rhythm, small boats are moored at old wharves with cormorants perched on their prows, and women wash clothes on the stone steps by the river…

0.5–1 day · Ancient town free; large cruise boat ¥80

Qinglong Cave Scenic Area

Known as the ‘Hanging Temple of Southwest China’, it brings together Confucian, Buddhist and Taoist architecture, as well as the building culture of guildhalls, bridges and post roads. It is a national key cultural heritage site and the most spectacular ancient architectural complex in the province. The buildings follow the lay of the land, spreading out in a soaring formation across the cliffs of Zhonghe Mountain by the Wuyang River. The scenic area has six highlights: Zhusheng Bridge, Zhongyuan Temple, Ziyang Cave, Qinglong Cave, Wanshou Palace and Xianglu Rock.

2–3 hours · ¥60

Tiexi Stream

Tiexi lies in the north of Zhenyuan, a place that is close to town yet blessed with beautiful scenery. It has pristine forest vegetation, rare animals and unusual stalactite caves. Longchi, the mountain pool, shines with a sea-like deep blue, like a royal blue mirror, and is known as the ‘Little Jiuzhaigou of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau’. Upturned eaves, pavilions and towers, faintly visible, are reflected in the stream, forming a richly coloured picture of nature. Tiexi is not only beautiful but also an excellent destination for outdoor hiking and adventure.

2–3 hours · ¥50

Shanmu River Rafting

The Shanmu River enjoys the reputation of ‘mineral spring river’. Its water is crystal clear and emerald green, transparent right to the bottom, with mountain peaks flanking both banks and a winding course that offers thrills without real danger, making it an excellent choice for eco-tourism. The scenic area is mainly enjoyed by rafting.

¥205

Shiping Mountain

The mountain takes its name from North Mountain, which resembles a large folding screen. From the summit you can take in the entire ancient town of Zhenyuan at a glance, with the Wuyang River winding through it in an S-shape and dividing the old town in two. There are two main sights on the mountain: Sigong Hall and the Fucheng Wall.

Getting there & around

Getting There

Surrounded by mountains, the area relies mainly on railways and highways.

Railway

The Xiangqian Railway runs through the scenic area. Several trains, including services from Guiyang toward Changsha, Guiyang to Beijing, and Guiyang to Huaihua, stop at Zhenyuan and Yuping.

Road

The Xiangqian Highway runs from Guiyang through Huangping, Shibing and Zhenyuan to Yuping. From Yuping, there are buses and minibuses to Tongren, so getting around is convenient. Long-distance coaches also run from Guiyang to Yinjiang.

Wuyang River Scenery

The scenery along the Wuyang River is fairly ordinary, but the environment is very well protected. Water birds can be seen on the river, the water is clear, and little-known Miao villages nestle in the deep mountains on both banks.

Difficult Mountain Roads

Guizhou has many mountain roads, and travel is winding and slow: a 100-km mountain route typically takes about 3 hours. Breakdowns and flat tyres are common along the way, so it is advisable to ride in a vehicle in good condition. There are almost no toll booths, so transport costs are relatively low; even between counties, most fares are under ¥10.

tip: Train K942

Guiyang–Wenzhou K942 departs Guiyang daily at 10:53 and can stop at Zhenyuan along the way.

Local Transport

Minibuses run between the scenic spots and are convenient.

In Zhenyuan county town, three-wheeled motorcycle taxis are the main form of transport, costing ¥2–3 per person within town and ¥3–5 to Qinglong Cave outside town.

Eat & drink

Locals love sour soup, and sour soup fish is the most famous dish. Other local specialties include pickled fish, bracken cakes (jueba), special cured bacon and jar-braised pork.

tip: Sour Flavours

Qiandongnan is the home of “sour eating,” and sour foods are found everywhere, loved by people of all ages. Almost every household keeps jars for sour water, vinegar water, pickled vegetables, pickled fish and pickled meat. There are sayings about sour foods, such as “pickle vegetables in March, fish in August, and cure meat in the first lunar month,” and “as long as the jar is sealed, the vegetables won't spoil.” Local specialties include Dong-style pickled fish, Zhenyuan dao cai (pickled vegetables), Kaili sour soup fish, Xiasi dog meat, Xiasi sour soup fish, lemongrass-grilled fish, Chong'an River sour soup fish, Dong-style oil tea, shefan, Congjiang fragrant pork, Sandui duck, Rongjiang fragrant lamb, dong guo, Dong-style pork hip, Dong-style sheep tripe and cattle tripe.

Where to stay

Zhenyuan county town has no high-end hotels, though accommodation is being improved. The best privately run hotel is Tenglong Hotel, whose staff service is close to five-star standard. Every scenic spot has accommodation, usually at guesthouse level.

Shopping

Main local specialties include raw lacquer, three-seven (sanqi), wood ear and shiitake mushrooms, gastrodia (tianma), tung oil seeds and aged dao cai pickles. Ethnic costumes and exquisite silver ornaments are also available, along with delicate, rustic folk crafts such as batik, mud whistles, straw weaving and bamboo weaving.
