### Preparation and Information

### Climate and Travel Season

Mount Tiantai is a well-known summer retreat in southeastern Zhejiang. The best time to visit is April to October. Visiting in July and August lets you enjoy the mountain scenery while escaping the scorching sun.

The locals are warm and unpretentious, and some of their customs are fascinating. If you can attend a local wedding and see the sedan-chair procession and the lively bridal-chamber teasing, you will take away something extraordinary. It feels like stepping back into the 1930s and 1940s.

### Getting Around Town

- tip: Most sights in Xikou Town can be reached on foot. You can also hire a pedicab, whose driver will accompany you around the town's scenic spots. To take in the mountain scenery, a sightseeing train or cable car is a good choice.

## Comer y beber

### Local Snacks

Xikou's “Three Treasures”: yuanai tou (taro dumplings), qiancengbing (thousand-layer pastry) and shuimi tao (honey peaches). All are delicacies you should not miss.

### Budget Eats

As at many other mountain scenic areas, the higher-end restaurants are mostly in the big hotels, such as the restaurant at Wuling Villa, the Fenghua Grand Hotel restaurant and the Huaxia Grand Hotel restaurant. For lunch in Xikou, however, there is no need to go to a restaurant. On the open ground in front of Wenchang Pavilion on the north bank of the Shan Creek (剡溪), many locals set up snack stalls, offering good value and a taste of local specialties.

Yuanwaiyuan Local Cuisine Restaurant has clearly displayed menu prices, and its taro and pork rib dish is good.
