## About Xunpu Fishing Village

As you wander the winding lanes of Xunpu Fishing Village, you will see houses decorated with oyster shells everywhere. Locals call them Ke'ke Houses (蚵壳厝), also known as Hao'ke Houses. Oysters (蚵, or mǔlì) are a type of marine shellfish, and these houses are built from oyster shells, laid in mortar and mud like overlapping fish scales. Because sea air along the coast is salty, windy and damp, red bricks easily corrode and flake, whereas oyster-shell walls resist erosion and do not leak. Hence the local saying, "Thousand-year bricks, ten-thousand-year oysters" (千年砖，万年蚵).
