## About Xinghai Square

Whether or not you have visited before, you will know its famous reputation as the largest city square in Asia. The square was modelled on the Circular Mound Altar of the Temple of Heaven in Beijing, and its carvings of the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, the 24 solar terms and the twelve zodiac animals showcase the charm of Chinese culture at every turn. The most enjoyable time to visit is the evening: rent a bicycle and effortlessly cycle around the square amid the dazzling night lights. As you pass the Shell Museum, which resembles a fortress-like castle, be sure to take a photo, as this distinctive architecture is not something you see everywhere.

## Tips from the guidebook

- Beer Festival: Every year from late July to early August, Xinghai Square hosts the China International Beer Festival. The atmosphere is lively, and hotels and restaurants nearby usually raise their prices during this period.
