## About Shamian Island

Covering 0.3 square kilometres, Shamian was once a foreign enclave and is now a tranquil residential area and tourist destination. Lush trees line its streets, and its street lamps, sculptures, pavilions and flower beds all carry a Western flavour. More than 150 buildings stand here, making it Guangzhou's most exotic spot.

## Tips from the guidebook

- Night views: When strolling Shamian, appreciate the European architecture not only for its aesthetics but also for its history. After the Opium War, the area was designated a concession for Britain and France. Over a century of rise and decline gives Shamian its distinctive sense of history.
