## About Qutang Gorge

The first stop on the Three Gorges and the shortest of the gorges, Qutang Gorge stretches about 8 kilometres from Baidicheng in Fengjie in the west to Daning River in Wushan in the east. Its main sights include Baidicheng, the Daxi ancient cultural site, and the hanging coffins of the ancient Ba people.

## Tips from the guidebook

- Baidicheng sits on Baidi Mountain at the western entrance of Qutang Gorge. It became world-famous because Liu Bei, defeated while campaigning against Eastern Wu during the Three Kingdoms period, entrusted his heir to the chancellor here. Baidicheng faces the Kui Gate to the east and is connected to the shore by a covered bridge. Inside the city stands the elegant, rustic Baidi Temple. On the east and west sides of Minliang Hall, more than 70 well-preserved stone steles from the Sui to the Qing dynasties are on display. The Phoenix Stele and the Bamboo Leaf Stele are the most distinctive and exquisite, drawing particular attention and considered treasures.
