## About Norbulingka

A renowned Tibetan garden and a place where Tibetans relax in their free time. Norbulingka means 'Jewel Park' in Tibetan. Construction began in the 1740s during the time of the 7th Dalai Lama, and it later served as the summer palace of successive Dalai Lamas. The grounds cover 360,000 square metres and consist of three palaces and gardens.

## Tips from the guidebook

- 1. This is also an important place for Tibetans to 'guo linka' (picnic in the grove). On holidays, Tibetans wear festive finery, pitch tents here, and sing and dance with great merriment. If you are lucky enough to be invited, feel free to let loose and eat and drink to your heart's content.
- 2. At 11:00 there is a wonderful performance of traditional Tibetan opera, well worth watching.
