## About National Peony Garden

They say “peonies are beautiful but have no fragrance,” yet walking through the peony garden, a fresh, subtle scent will surely greet you. The peony, China’s “national flower,” lives up to its reputation for unmatched beauty without any artifice. For many travellers on a Central Plains tour, seeing peonies in Luoyang is a must, and the Luoyang Peony Festival in April and May draws enormous crowds. Standing among the blooms, the “Luoyang Red” is a deep, almost purple red, the “Zibanbai” white is pure and sacred, the “Dushibai” is like a handful of snow, and the “Zhao Fen” pink, which is “too red with one more touch and too white with one less,” is so delicate you can hardly imagine it.

## Tips from the guidebook

- 1. Peony Festival: The Luoyang Peony Festival, held from 10 to 25 April each year, is one of the signature highlights of a trip to Luoyang. Blooms in the city usually fade after about the 20th, so visit the Mangshan Peony Garden to see flowers that are still in bloom.
- 2. Higher prices: Visitor numbers rise during the Peony Festival and prices across the board go up. Hotel rates may double or triple in the first few days and rooms sell out, so book well in advance.
- 3. Autumn: For travellers who want to avoid the peony crowds, autumn is without doubt the best season to visit Luoyang. The air is crisp and clear, ideal for hiking and chrysanthemum viewing.
