## About Fanjingshan Mountain

The more than 8,000 stone steps have earned Fanjingshan the title ‘Heavenly Ladder to the Buddhist Realm.’
A national nature reserve and the most magnificent peak in Guizhou Province, its highest summit, Hongyun Jinding (Red Cloud Golden Summit), rises 2,494 meters above sea level.
Famous summit sights include the Wanjuan Scriptures (Ten Thousand Scrolls) and Mushroom Rock. Most striking is the ever-changing mountain weather: when the clouds suddenly part and the mist clears, a picture-perfect scene unfolds before your eyes.
The scenic area’s primeval ecosystem is remarkably well preserved, with rare ancient plants such as the dove tree, fir and Tsuga longibracteata, as well as many endangered animals including the Guizhou snub-nosed monkey, the red-faced macaque and the Chinese giant salamander, along with a great variety of snakes.
Buddhist legends and landscapes further set Fanjingshan apart. If you are lucky, between Jinding and Mushroom Rock you may witness the mysterious Buddhist Glory (Buddha light) phenomenon.

## Tips from the guidebook

- Hiking tips: 1. From the main gate, the only way up is on foot along the Heiwan River, which takes about 30 minutes.
- 2. Be wary of snakes in summer. You are unlikely to encounter them on the main trail, so don’t venture off the path.
- 3. Mountain weather changes quickly, so choose a clear day to climb; otherwise, dense fog may hide the views and leave you disappointed.
- Accommodation: You can stay at the guesthouse at the summit for ¥100 per person, or spend the night at a temple at the foot of Jinding to watch the sea of clouds and the sunrise the next morning.
