## The feel of the place

- **Sunrise:** Watching the sunrise is a wish for many people visiting Mount Tai, or rather, an essential item on the itinerary. Around 5:00 am, the summit is already crowded with tourists, photography enthusiasts carrying equipment, and professional photographers touting their services. Everywhere you look, army greatcoats are bobbing about. Some people have waited here all night, some rushed up from the foot of the mountain overnight, and others got up very early. To witness this glorious moment, everyone sits or lies in the biting wind on the summit, waiting patiently. Light slowly breaks through the clouds, the sun gradually rises, the sky grows brighter, and then the crowd starts to cheer. This is a ritual on Mount Tai.
- **Porters:** Porters on Mount Tai came into being because of the mountain's steep terrain. Most of them are locals who look honest and simple. When climbers feel overwhelmed, they think of porters or sedan-chair bearers. However, you may also run into a porter who tries to 'overcharge' tourists. So come prepared: before hiring a porter, make sure everything is clearly agreed upon. Otherwise, it's better to rely on your own two legs.
- **Rich Cultural Atmosphere:** Mount Tai has a strong cultural atmosphere, and each place has its own scenery. In general, the front mountain is for culture and the back mountain is for scenery. Along the way, you will find inscriptions by literati from every dynasty. Attentive visitors will also notice advertisements from before the founding of the People's Republic of China carved into the rock walls.

### Avoid the Peak Season if Possible

1. Avoid visiting Mount Tai during Labour Day and National Day each year, otherwise all you will see is crowds.

2. Don't give up on climbing just because it's raining. Rainy weather is when sea-of-clouds spectacles are most likely to appear, and if you catch a sea of clouds at sunrise, you're even luckier.

### Mount Tai's Three Major Events

The Dongyue Temple Fair, the Mount Tai Coming-of-Age Ceremony and the Champion Climbing Race are events held on Mount Tai every year, attracting many visitors.

### Preparation and Information

### Language

Thousands upon thousands of people flock to Mount Tai every day, and the locals have long learned to handle any situation with ease. Mandarin is, of course, no problem.

### Climate and Travel Seasons

The mountain's scenery varies with the seasons, so you can climb Mount Tai at any time of year. However, April to November is the golden travel season. For sunrise, autumn is best.

Spring brings strong winds to Mount Tai. Summer's average temperature is 21℃, so Mount Tai is free of fierce heat. Climbing in summer under the shade of green pines and cypresses is cool and comfortable, but bring warm clothing for the summit. If you reach the top just after the rain has cleared, you will be greeted by a magnificent view of red clouds and emerald waves. Winter is quite cold, but there are more chances to see the sunrise. If it has just snowed, the silver-white landscape, with rime frost on the trees, is the most beautiful of all.

## Getting there & around

### Getting In and Out

Mount Tai Scenic Area lies in central Shandong, spanning the cities of Tai'an and Jinan. Getting to and from Mount Tai relies mainly on rail and road, and Shandong's extensive transport network makes travel very convenient.

### By Air

Tai'an has no airport. The nearest is Jinan Yaoqiang International Airport, about 110 km away. The airport has direct shuttle buses to Tai'an, 14 services a day, taking about 1.5 hours, with a fare of ¥35. A taxi from Jinan Airport to Jinan Railway Station costs about ¥140.

### Yaoqiang Airport to City Centre Shuttle Bus Routes

Operating hours: 9:00–22:00, one departure every hour. Once you land, you can board the passenger shuttle to the city centre at the airport exit at any time.

### Rail

Taishan Railway Station (泰山火车站) is the older railway station and the central transport hub for travelling to Mount Tai, with fairly convenient connections. Forty-four pairs of express, direct and ordinary passenger trains stop at Taishan Station each day.

### High-Speed Rail

Tai'an Station (泰安站) is served by all EMUs and high-speed trains. Services currently run to Jinan West, Shanghai Hongqiao, Beijing South, Qingdao, Hangzhou, Tianjin West and Fuzhou, among other destinations.

### Road

Tai'an's main long-distance bus stations are the Old Station and the New Station. The Old Station is larger. Its buses reach destinations across Shandong Province as well as Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang, making it the largest passenger hub in the Tai'an area. From the bus station, buses run to Jinan every 30 minutes, to Qufu and Jining every 20 minutes, to Laiwu every 30 minutes, and to Linyi hourly. Buses from the New Station mainly serve destinations within Shandong Province.

### Long-Distance Bus Stations

### Getting Around Town

Mount Tai lies within the municipality of Tai'an, a fairly small city.

To visit Mount Tai, take a train to Taishan Station. A minibus taxi (mianbao, seating 5–6 passengers) from the city centre to Hongmen at the foot of the mountain costs no more than ¥10. Taxis start at ¥6 for the first 2 km, then ¥1.5 per km. Fares are somewhat higher after 22:00, and you can negotiate.

City buses also take visitors to Daimiao Temple (岱庙). Tourist shuttles run directly from Tianwai Village (天外村) to Zhongtianmen (中天门, Middle Heavenly Gate), and a cable car runs from Zhongtianmen to Nantianmen (南天门, South Heavenly Gate). On the return journey, public buses at Zhongtianmen can only take you as far as Tianwai Village. From there, transfer to a taxi or public bus to the long-distance bus station.

## Eat & drink

Mount Tai has plenty of restaurants both in central Tai'an and at Zhongtianmen (Middle Heavenly Gate). Tai'an cuisine is fresh, clean-tasting and quite well regarded in its own right. Among its best-known dishes are Lotus Tofu, Hibiscus Tofu, Cabbage in Milk Broth, Tofu Balls, Crispy Fried Red-scale Fish, Cold Fresh Daylily Salad and Cold Lilac Salad. Lamb skewers and grilled sweet potatoes are also popular with visitors for their good value and taste. Tai'an pancakes, prized for their crisp, savoury flavour, have been a household snack in Tai'an since the Ming Dynasty. The Mount Tai Tofu Feast and Wild Vegetable Feast are especially renowned. Past emperors ate vegetarian meals to purify their bodies and minds as a mark of reverence.

### Generous portions of Tai'an food

Portions here are large and generous. Dumpling restaurants, which you will find all over Tai'an, serve dumplings boiled in batches starting from 3 liang (150 g), so many visitors are full after dumplings and cannot manage stir-fried dishes. It is best not to order too much.

- tip: Keep your ticket safe. There are many checkpoints along the way where tickets are re-checked. Members of tour groups or travelling companions should each keep their own tickets carefully, or they will have to buy a replacement.

### Tips for Climbing Mount Tai

1. The climb is demanding, so you do not need to carry much food, drink or heavy clothing. These are all available on the mountain at reasonable prices. If you feel cold, you can rent a padded overcoat at the summit (South Heavenly Gate) for ¥10–15 per piece.

2. If you climb from Hongmen (Red Gate), buy your ticket at Wanxian Tower (Wanxian Lou). Tickets are checked along the way, so keep yours handy.

3. Many travellers recommend climbing at night and sightseeing on the way down during the day. There are plenty of hotels near Mount Tai Station, so there is no need to stay on the mountain. Nights are cold, but climbing is less tiring than you might expect, at least in relative terms.

4. Public toilets here are clean and free of charge. Look for the “WC” sign.

### Staying warm

Whatever the season, rent a military-style greatcoat at Tianjie (Sky Street) when you reach the summit. Sunrise is very cold!

### The Three Delights of Mount Tai

Cabbage, tofu and water are known together as the “Three Delights of Mount Tai.” The tofu feast and wild vegetable feast have long histories. The tofu feast alone includes more than 150 dishes.

### Tai'an's Three Famous Local Specialities

Mount Tai chestnuts, Feicheng peaches and Ningyang red dates.

For a meal on the summit, the buffet at Shenqi Hotel is a good option. The breakfast buffet costs ¥88 per person and the food is quite good.

## Shopping

### Recommended Shopping

### Where to Shop on Mount Tai

Along Tianjie, the street between the South Heavenly Gate and Bixia Temple at the summit, you can buy collectable stones and stone carvings. Also, 200 metres east of the railway station, at the western end of Caiyuan Street, is Sihai Shopping Mall, which sells mid- to low-priced clothing and small items and is worth a look.

- **Swallow Stone Carvings** — In his Xiqing Inkstone Catalogue, Emperor Qianlong ranked inkstones made of swallow stone at the top of all inkstones. Prized by scholars through the ages for its fine texture, moisture retention and ease of producing ink, swallow stone is a true treasure.
- **Black Jade Carvings** — Black jade is a dark stone unique to Mount Tai. Artworks carved from it have a lustrous, fine finish.
- **Stele Rubbings** — Mount Tai and Dai Temple contain many famous steles. Tai'an has been celebrated for producing stele rubbings for centuries.

## Where to stay

Accommodation on Mount Tai falls into two categories: on the mountain itself and in central Tai'an. On the summit you will find options at every level, from the three-star Shenqi Hotel and one-star Xianju Hotel to small private guesthouses, with prices to suit every budget. However, Tai'an, at the foot of the mountain, generally offers better prices and facilities than the summit.

- **Luyao Mountain Homestay** — Designed by a well-known domestic designer, Luyao Mountain Homestay combines guest rooms, a café, bamboo gardens, outdoor lawns and other functional and decorative spaces in perfect harmony. It is the only centralised, courtyard-style, mixed-use homestay at the foot of Mount Tai. (No. 199, Jiangan Yu, Mount Tai Scenic Area, 0538-6677777/17753873507)
