## The feel of the place

### Best Time to Visit

Late September to April of the following year is the frost season. June through October is the best time to visit Shennongjia.

### Travel Tips

1. Shennongjia's primeval forest is vast, transport is limited, and many areas are closed to visitors. To avoid getting lost, it is best to hire a guide, which costs about ¥150 per day.

2. When hiking in the forest, wear a hat, long sleeves and long trousers, and tuck in your cuffs and trouser legs. Wear high boots to protect yourself against venomous insects and snakes.

3. If you are caught in a thunderstorm in the mountains, first identify your direction, then find a relatively open flat area. This keeps you from getting lost and away from lightning strikes.

4. Essentials to bring: a sealed container (for matches and a raincoat), UV-protection sunglasses, a penknife, rope, and a compass.

## Things to see

- **Tianyan Primeval Ecological Tourism Area** (★★★★★): Admission ¥60; joint ticket ¥480 (includes Shennong Peak, Shennong Altar, Tiansheng Bridge, Guanmen Mountain, Tianyan, and Dajiuhu); Opening hours 7:00–17:30 (June 26–October 31); 8:30–17:30 (November 1–June 25)
Yanzi Pass and Yanzi Cave are said to be where Yandi Shennong and Taishang Laojun once met. At an altitude of 2,200 m, the pass faces Tianmen Pass across a north–south axis, overlooks the Zizhu River valley, and is surrounded by extensive primeval forest.
About 1,000 m northeast of Yanzi Pass, on a cliffside, lies the renowned Yanzi Cave. The cave is 14 m high and 16 m wide, with a main passage of about 3,700 m. It is home to large numbers of short-billed swiftlets (短嘴金丝燕). Shennongjia's favourable natural environment has caused them to lose the migratory habits typical of their kind, so they no longer fly south or north.
From the stone-stepped pavilion northwest of Yanzi Pass, looking back toward the cave mouth, you can see the spectacular sight of swarms of swiftlets wheeling through the air.
Hongping Gallery, also known as Shennong Ladder, is a large gorge within the primeval forest. The peaks and streams of the gallery each have their own charm through the four seasons. North of Hongping Gallery is the Tianmen Pass scenic area; if you have ample time, visit both. — https://cnatrip.com/en/places/tianyan-primeval-ecological-tourism-area
