## Über Tongli Ancient Town

Tongli produced many celebrities and high officials, so a number of its lanes and streets are named after official posts, such as Zhuangyuan Street (状元街) and Tongzhi Yamen (同知衙门). The first thing visitors notice on entering Tongli is the many bridges, big and small: there are 24 in all. Siben Bridge (思本桥), built in the Southern Song dynasty, is the oldest, and Fuguan Bridge (富观桥) from the Yuan dynasty is particularly impressive. There are also many stone steles from different dynasties. In this water town of canal-side houses, Ming and Qing buildings make up about 40 percent of the architecture.
Three Bridges (三桥) For the people of Tongli, the Three Bridges symbolise good fortune and happiness. At weddings and other joyful occasions, couples and their families walk around the three bridges, calling out loudly “Taiping jili changqing!” (太平吉利长庆, “peace, luck and lasting prosperity”). On a 66th birthday, the celebrant also walks the three bridges after lunch for good luck.
Tuisi Garden (退思园) The garden’s intimate, modest charm has a quiet subtlety. Film and television productions such as “The Family,” “Spring,” “Autumn,” “Dream of the Red Chamber” and “Qianlong Incognito” have been filmed here.
Pearl Tower (珍珠塔) Pearl Tower is not just a single tower but an exquisitely lavish censor’s residence, and it is also the setting of a beautiful love story with a happy ending. The model of the heirloom pearl tower that Cuie gives as a gift in the story is displayed on the second floor, and visitors who are interested can take a look.
Xingluo Islet (星罗洲) Xingluo Islet is a temple built on the water, reached in just a few minutes by small boat. The journey is scenic, with misty expanses of lake and fishing boats dotted across the water. Luoxing Islet is a sacred site where Buddhism, Daoism and Confucianism are united, with the City God Hall, Wenchang Pavilion, Doumu Pavilion, a zigzag bridge and a Fish Pond of Joy. The layout is compact, and it is both a temple and a garden.

- The town is free to enter from 17:00 to 7:00 the next day, but there are no tickets for the attractions inside, so you cannot enter them.

- Visitors aged 70 and over enter free with proof of age; visitors aged 60 and over receive 20 percent off; children under 1,3 m receive half price; groups of 16 or more receive 10 percent off.
- Local specialities
- Euryale seed porridge (芡实粥), Zhuangyuan trotters (状元蹄) and Three Whites of Lake Tai (Lake Tai silverfish, white fish and white shrimp) are famous local dishes. Shrimp cakes, green sticky rice dumplings (青团子), Tuisi cakes (退思饼), stewed chicken with wheat gluten (水面筋炖草鸡) and Ama vegetables (阿婆菜) are other local snacks also worth trying.
