## Über Luzhi Ancient Town

Luzhi is a Jiangnan water town known for its Arhat sculptures and its historic commercial street. Its 72½ bridges are also world-famous. The modern writer Ye Shengtao (叶圣陶) taught here in his early years and often called Luzhi his “second hometown”; his love for the place is clear, and his grave lies here. “Many small bridges span the water lanes, and every house rests on the river” is a true description of Luzhi’s rich water-town atmosphere.
Baosheng Temple (保圣寺) Baosheng Temple is a thousand-year-old monastery, said to be one of the Four Great Temples of Jiangnan. Its surviving buildings include the Second Gate, the Hall of the Heavenly Kings and an antiquities museum. The clay Arhat sculptures in the museum’s antiquities hall are said to be the work of Yang Huizhi, the Tang-dynasty sculptor-saint. They are extremely precious and, despite a thousand years of change, remain in excellent condition.
Ye Shengtao Memorial Hall (叶圣陶纪念馆) This is the place where the writer, educator, publisher and social activist Ye Shengtao worked. To express their respect and remembrance for Mr Ye, the people of Luzhi rebuilt several former sites where he taught and opened them as Ye Shengtao Memorial Hall. Ye wrote a number of short stories set in Luzhi here, such as “The Dawn Lute Song,” “Harvested Three or Five More Dou” and “The Tall Ginkgo Tree.”
